  • A study by UMass Lowell shows that traces of fentanyl, ketamine, and a cocaine byproduct reduce survival and slow movement of Eastern oyster larvae in coastal waters; research comes as restoration efforts increase to recover oyster populations in Long Island Sound.  CTPost

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Metro-North trains now charge an extra $2 for onboard ticket purchases and Connecticut travelers must use unlimited day passes instead of round-trip tickets; the new policy took effect on Sunday as part of the MTA's plan to improve service and address rising costs.  WFSB

HEALTH NEWS

  • Experts say the drug-resistant fungus Candida auris may already be in Connecticut as local health officials take precautions, despite only eight clinical cases being reported from 2016 to 2023. Healthy residents are advised to follow standard hygiene practices.  CTPost

  • UConn's women remain the nation's top-ranked team with a 31-game win streak, per Carl Adamec's Top 25 ballot. The Huskies are 15-0 after Quad-1 wins (against Michigan, Iowa, Louisville and USC) in games played over the past weekend.  CTPost
  • The UConn men's basketball team secured a 73-57 win over Marquette at Gampel Pavilion on Sunday, Jan. 4, with Solo Ball (17 points, eight rebounds) and Tarris Reed Jr. (13 points, nine boards) boosting their record to 14-1 overall and 4-0 in the Big East.  The Hour
  • Bristol native Donovan Clingan scored a career-high 24 points with three 3-pointers as the Trailblazers upset the Spurs 115-110 in San Antonio on Saturday, Jan. 3 with Stephon Castle adding 16 points and nine assists in a loss.  The Hour
