COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Wheels2U launches its midday door to door service available on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, including today, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to help residents reach Saugatuck and Greens Farms train stations + skip the search for parking.  Westport Journal
  • At the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk on Feb. 4, 2026, 1-year-old seal Mikey predicted Super Bowl LX by choosing the New England Patriots football. He was trained for the event following star Rasal’s tradition + now the animal event is media only but may open to the public next year.  The Hour

CULTURE NEWS

  • Van Halen will release a vinyl record of its 1986 New Haven concert for Record Store Day on Saturday, April 18. Limited to 5,000 copies, fans can find it at participating shops like Gerosa Records — a lineup that includes local stores in Brookfield, Darien, Branford and Milford.  The Hour

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The average price of home heating oil has risen nearly 17 percent since last year, reaching just under $4.09 per gallon on Monday, Feb. 3, according to state data. The rise is linked to increased demand from power plant operators as fuel supplies shift with natural gas limitations.  The Hour

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gov. Ned Lamont will detail his state budget proposal to fund free breakfast for all K-12 students Thursday at 11 a.m. at Florence E. Smith STEM School. He first mentioned the plan during his State of the State this week and his proposal would also remove reduced-price lunch charges.  WFSB
  • St. Paul’s School in Kensington added a second pre-K 3 classroom (serving 20 extra students) in response to a state policy that requires children to turn 5 by Sept. 1. The school will host an open house on Feb. 8 (11 a.m. to 1 p.m.) for families from preschool through grade 8.  WFSB
  • The Long Lots School Building Committee shared a progress update yesterday on the school renovation at Long Lots Elementary. Geothermal drilling is underway and bids for the new building will be reviewed in March (more updates will follow before construction begins in April).  06880
  • Westport Public Schools Superintendent Thomas Scarice warns that ongoing winter storms and cold conditions may cause school closures and delays through March; decisions will be made by 5:30 a.m. based on conditions (including temperature differences and town coordination).  Westport Journal

  • Gov. Lamont’s budget proposal that reassigns provider tax funds is drawing opposition from hospital leaders who say Medicaid underpayment is a bigger problem; the plan reallocates $40 million—including $15 million for Waterbury Hospital, set soon to be exempt from the tax—to comply with federal guidelines.  CTPost

  • Westport Weston Family YMCA’s Knock Parkinson’s Out boxing program continues to grow (now nearly 35 boxers meet twice weekly) to build strength, balance, and connection under head instructor Brenda Waldron; volunteers share camaraderie through sessions and group trips, including a bus trip to New York.  06880

  • Several Connecticut restaurants offer special Valentine’s Day menus as local diners enjoy multi-course prix fixe dinners & a la carte options, with Westport’s The Cottage presenting a four-course dinner for $125 and other venues in New Haven, Glastonbury, and Mohegan Sun featuring specials from Feb. 9-16.  CTPost

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Sunday, UConn women’s basketball recorded a 96-66 win over Tennessee, drawing 1.21 million FOX viewers in the most-watched women’s game this season. Fudd & Strong combined for 53 points as the Huskies achieved a historic performance.  The Hour
  • Wilton and Ridgefield will renew their Thanksgiving high school football rivalry next season, ending a 20-year pause on the traditional matchup. Coaches say players & fans are eager for the renewed contest.  The Hour
