CULTURE NEWS

  • The Pequot Library in Southport will host a lecture on the artists of the American Revolution on Monday, Feb. 23 at 10:30 a.m. Art historian Christine Hauck will lead the free event + registration is required.  Westport Journal
  • Westport native Susan Granger recommends watching Drops of God on Apple TV, an acclaimed manga adaptation that earned a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score and Best Drama at the International Emmy Awards + season two is in progress.  Westport Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Westport EMS is offering an EMT course teaching lifesaving skills such as bandaging and trauma care, with an orientation scheduled on Feb. 23 at Westport EMS Headquarters (50 Jesup Road). Applicants must be 16 or older and sign up now to secure a spot in the hands-on training.  Westport Journal
  • Teachers are pushing for a statewide ban on cell phones to protect student mental health and improve classroom focus, with a public hearing scheduled today at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford — community members can sign up to share their opinions.  WFSB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • District Representatives from Districts 1, 4 and 9 will hold a public discussion on Cribari Bridge on Tuesday, Feb. 24 (7 p.m.) via Zoom; the state DOT has opened a 60-day comment period through April 17 and will host a public hearing on March 19 at Town Hall.  06880
  • Town attorney Ira Bloom said officials are reviewing options after a court ruling ordered Old Mill Grocery & Deli to cease selling alcohol inconsistent with its preexisting use. Also, the state DOT released a 160-page Environmental Assessment evaluating five alternatives for Cribari Bridge, with replacement on-alignment preferred.  06880
  • Approximately 80 members of the 143rd Regional Support Group will leave for Iraq and Kuwait to support Operation Inherent Resolve & a sendoff ceremony will be held Saturday at the Hartford armory.  WFSB
