Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 21st of March.
Good morning, Westport.
🎓 Education
At Staples High School, coaches now give athletes a generic plaque instead of the cherished Block S award — a change made for budget reasons that sparked controversy among board members and alumni — while athletic director VJ Sarullo said he will look into alternative options to restore the 70-year tradition.
🏛️ Government
Westport's Architectural Review Board approved plans for the new Apple Montessori School at 980 Post Road East—a former bank building set to serve about 130 children with a pool and play area—and a 23,000-square-foot racquet sports facility at Fairfield County Hunt Club that will need zoning review. Additional sign applications for The Country Store and TownHouse for Dogs and Cats were also approved after adjustments to ease traffic and size concerns.
The Westport Parks and Recreation Commission backed a pilot program to rent two metal fire pits at Compo Beach this summer with one fire pit allowed per household from 4 to 10 p.m. and staff on site to enforce safety measures—commission members will hold a virtual meeting next week to vote on final permit rules.
