COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Town bodies approved plans for the PAL clubhouse at PJ Romano Field— the $1.3 million project is about $800,000 short, so the nonprofit will seek large donations before construction can begin.  06880
  • Attorney General William Tong spoke to a large crowd at Y’s Women yesterday about state lawsuits against tobacco and drug companies and said judges must make the president follow the law while Westport native Jake Sussman will be honored on April 10 at Woodway Country Club for mentoring youth — work that has helped thousands. On Sunday, residents donated 180 bags of food to Homes with Hope and local events including a town meeting conversation, a book festival panel, and jazz and piano shows have marked a busy round of local activity — reflecting a strong community effort.  06880

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Staples High School students in Westport won awards at two academic conferences in business and international relations. They earned honors at the Connecticut FBLA Conference on March 18 and at the Model United Nations event where four students were recognized for their debate work — showing their strong skills and effort.  Westport Journal
  • Staples High School in Westport named seven Students of the Month for March: senior Massimo Sequenzia, juniors Vincent Vega and Angela Dellorusso, sophomores Ignacy Nieweglowski and Hayley Epstein, and freshmen Petra Schwartz and Chloe Endich. Teachers nominated the students who act as a glue—making the school a welcoming place for peers and staff.  Westport Journal
  • Westport School Board accepted $86,660 in Staples booster club donations to pay 21 assistant coaches and chose Hanover Research as its new vendor for a student climate survey while approving academic calendars for 2025-26 and 2026-27. The calendars will start classes on Aug. 26 and Aug. 25 respectively—each featuring professional development days for teachers—ensuring coordinated schedules for both students and staff.  Westport Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lawmakers at the State Capitol revised a bill so that after 2027 only state agencies are banned from buying new gas-powered leaf blowers after years of failed efforts to ban them statewide. Westport Rep. Jonathan Steinberg said the state will impose more limits on gas blowers while Rep. Doug Dubitsky of Chaplin said the change is too expensive + the debate continues.  News 12 Connecticut
