  • The Westport Downtown Association sent a survey that showed residents want Church Lane closed for all seven days from Memorial Day to Labor Day for outdoor dining and live music. Some local business owners like the busy streets while others say parking suffers on nearby roads — and the final decision will come next Wednesday.  News 12 Connecticut
  • Local chef Brian Lewis of The Cottage was named one of five nominees for Best Chef in New England by the James Beard Foundation and the winner will be announced June 16 in Chicago—Westport’s Blondinit offers a kosher Passover menu with catering orders due April 7. Other events include the Minute Man Race on April 27, the Day of Champions on May 18, a bicycle drive at CB Sportif today and April 5, a tribute to Barbra Streisand at the Westport Country Playhouse on April 24, and a rise in boats returning to Ned Dimes Marina while police issued various traffic citations from March 26 to April 2.  06880

CRIME NEWS

  • Jimmy Smith, a 30-year-old man originally from Jamaica living in Georgia, was indicted Tuesday for running a sweepstakes scam that defrauded victims in Connecticut and other states by asking them to send money to claim prize winnings; he was arrested in Florida on March 17 and is set for arraignment today in federal court in New Haven.  WFSB
  • Connecticut Natural Gas and Southern Connecticut Gas said a third party illegally accessed customer billing information including names, account balances, addresses and phone numbers—though no banking data, Social Security numbers or credit card info were exposed. The companies warned customers to ignore unknown calls asking for payments and said they will contact affected customers soon.  News 12 Connecticut

CULTURE NEWS

  • Keith Richards was honored last month at the Westport Library when Governor Lamont recognized him and he signed several collectible items for auction instead of performing—these items include his signature guitar with a starting bid of $12,500, signed first-edition copies of his memoir, and autographed art; the auction ends at 11:59 p.m. Sunday, April 6th to benefit VersoFest.  06880

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Board of Finance approved $238,000 to fund a study for a new maintenance building for the Parks and Recreation Department at Longshore Club Park—marking a shift following earlier rejections. The study will assess the building’s size, location and design and still must be approved by the Representative Town Meeting.  Westport Journal
