CRIME NEWS

  • Between April 2 and April 9, Westport police issued 43 distracted-driving citations during the U Drive. U Text. U Pay. campaign, nearly tripling the 16 tickets given in March—officials say the blitz aims to warn drivers to avoid phone use and other distractions while driving.  Westport Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Staples High School’s 'We the People' team led by teacher Suzanne Kammerman earned its highest national finish when it placed 8th after a second-place state finish and a wild card entry to compete in Washington with 48 teams—meeting Senator Chris Murphy along the way.  06880

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Data mailers have been sent to Westport property owners to verify property details for the revaluation process—owners must review and return the forms to ensure accurate tax assessments.  Westport Journal
  • 1st Selectwoman Jen Tooker said the town was not told before the CT DOT cut down many trees behind Walgreens at 900 Post Road East for a new maintenance facility, and that local officials are in regular talks with state project leaders about adding fences and plants as work continues over the next 16—18 months. She also clarified that plans for a land swap involved only state groups—no property was ever considered for transfer to the town.  06880
  • One Manchester senator wants to use state surpluses to gradually phase out Connecticut's regressive car tax — critics say towns may lose essential revenue. A public hearing was held today and the proposal now awaits finance committee approval — with opponents opposing the change.  WFSB

SPORTS NEWS

  • Staples High’s girls tennis team opened its season Monday at 4 p.m. against New Canaan in Westport — coach Jennifer Wider said the mix of returning players and new talent gives the team a strong chance to go deep in the playoffs. They will face tough competition ahead and play a home match with Wilton on April 28 — officials say the season looks promising.  Westport Journal
  • Staples High baseball began its season with a 10+2 win over Ridgefield on April 9 but then lost 6+0 to Greenwich in the home opener. They will play Fairfield Warde on May 5, face New Canaan at 4 p.m. on Thursday, and return home to play Glastonbury at 1 p.m. on Saturday as they work to reach the state playoffs.  Westport Journal
