EDUCATION NEWS

  • Isabel Jo and Uma Choudhury will speak at Staples High School's graduation on June 15 — the valedictorian, known for her music and riding skills, and the salutatorian, a black belt and Science Olympiad captain, show excellence in academics and extracurriculars.  06880
  • TEAM Westport, in partnership with The Westport Library, will present the winners of its 13th Annual Teen Diversity Essay Contest on Tuesday, April 28 from 6-7 p.m. at the library (the contest invited teens to share essays on the Declaration of Independence and community values).  Westport Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk welcomed a new harbor seal named Kaya from California. The 8-year-old seal is adjusting well in Pinniped Cove and helps guests learn about local conservation efforts.  The Hour

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Dispensaries saw heavy traffic Monday as cannabis fans celebrated 4/20 while state lawmakers discussed a bill to switch from a potency-based tax to an 11% flat rate + aim to lower prices and boost local business.  WFSB

HEALTH NEWS

  • UConn Health is adding Day Kimball and Bristol hospitals to its 925-bed network to strengthen local affordable care. Formal agreements are expected soon — state bond funding and cost-saving measures support the initiative.  The Hour
  • In March, Westport health inspectors cited 15 eateries for serious health code violations, with establishments like Gruel Britannia and Riko’s Pizza promptly correcting issues such as improper sanitizer strength and unsafe food temperatures (Health Department report).  The Hour

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • A local creamery (in Newtown) was ranked as the top ice cream shop nationwide by food app Beli. Although Ferris Acres is closed for the season today, it will reopen May 5 with its family-made flavors.  The Hour
