EDUCATION NEWS

  • PTA leaders at Staples High School have asked the Board of Education to form a committee to study the pros and cons of a bell-to-bell cellphone ban before it is implemented. The board will hold a special meeting on Tuesday, May 6 at 7:30 p.m. at Coleytown Middle School to gather public feedback and review how similar districts have managed cellphone policies.  Westport Journal
  • The Board of Education accepted two gifts totaling over $33,000 on Thursday from the Staples Music Parents Association and the Coleytown Middle School PTA to support school programs—$23,116.46 will help the Orphenians fund a trip to a choral festival in Spain and $10,000 will contribute to installing a new sound system in the school auditorium—plans that will proceed with the new fiscal year starting July 1.  Westport Journal
  • Apple Montessori Schools is seeking special permit approval to use the former Bank of America building at 980 Post Road East for an early learning center that will serve up to 124 children from infant through kindergarten and plans to improve building access and parking — including adding outdoor play areas with an 800-square-foot in-ground swimming pool. The proposal will be reviewed by the Westport Planning and Zoning Commission on Monday.  CTPost
  • After spring break, padlocks were installed on two gate doors at Staples High School—cutting off the usual route local students used and forcing many to drive instead. Superintendent Thomas Scarice said he is meeting with school officials, Westport Police and the Conservation Dept—seeking an explanation for the sudden change.  06880

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Earlier this week, Westport Department of Public Works trimmed overgrown vegetation at the intersection of Compo Road South and Soundview Drive to restore sight lines—one local neighbor commended the work for helping keep drivers, pedestrians, and pets safe. This maintenance work is part of ongoing efforts to ensure clear visibility near the busy Compo Beach area.  Westport Journal

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • U Park Garden Westport LLC plans to expand its property at 220 Post Road West to add affordable housing and mixed-use space—project plans include up to 15 one-bedroom and two two-bedroom units, private patios, solar panels and EV chargers. The developer is working with the Planning and Zoning Commission and will file an application after a pre-application discussion scheduled for Monday, May 5.  CTPost
