COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Planning and Zoning Commission meets May 13 at 6 p.m. to review field lighting and concessions leases. Parks and Rec kicks off summer on May 23 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. — featuring a student mural unveiling, and Westport Library hosts an AI talk Friday at 10 a.m.  06880
  • Birding enthusiasts can join the Connecticut Audubon Society's Migration Magic events this May; a guided walk begins today at 7 a.m. at Birdcraft Museum and Sanctuary in Fairfield, with more events on May 9, 23, and 30 featuring free birding programs and a month-long birdathon and photo contest.  Westport Journal
  • Survivors of Homicide, Inc. launched the Loved Ones Property Return Pilot Program to help police return victims’ belongings with dignity. Five police departments now use branded tote bags — a measure to ease family trauma during the return of personal items.  News 12 Connecticut

  • Connecticut officials announced that the upcoming tax-free week will allow purchases up to $300—now including select school supplies. Shoppers can plan their back-to-school buying with the added savings in mind.  CTPost

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • NOAA reported that neutral Pacific conditions continue but there is a 61% chance a strong El Niño will develop between May and July and last through winter — a change that may bring hotter summers and heavier nor'easter snowfall. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers in Westport should prepare for overnight milling and paving on Routes 1 and 57; work begins on Post Road East May 10 and on Route 57 May 26 with later phases extending into June (the schedule is subject to weather changes).  Westport Journal
