Good morning, Westport. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 11th of May.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Saturday, Westport boxing coach Rich Dean hosted the second annual Gloves for Good charity event where eight amateur boxers were awarded championship belts and Staples High School students took part to raise money for the Westport PAL Scholarship Fund — he hoped ticket sales and a silent auction would reach a $10,000 goal — showing strong community support for local education.  News 12 Connecticut
  • Veterans of Foreign War Post 399 was named an All-American Post—honoring its 105-year legacy—and will join American Legion Post 63 for a fundraising golf tournament on June 16 at Longshore while Westport Library opens its Big Spring Book Sale on May 16 with special early access for ticket holders. Additional local events include a medical series on breast cancer at the library on June 3, a dark matter lecture by the Westport Astronomical Society at 8 p.m. on May 20, and a summer theater program at Westport Country Playhouse from August 4 to 15.  06880
  • Westport neighbors have promised to appeal the Planning and Zoning Commission’s approval of a 22,000‑square‑foot indoor racquet sports facility at Fairfield County Hunt Club on 174 Long Lots Road. They say the building is too large, will be noisy and lower property values — while club representatives say the facility will serve about 200 families without harming nearby homes.  CTPost

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Saturday, traffic slowed on I-95 in Westport and Fairfield after a tractor-trailer toppled into an embankment between exits 19 and 21—state police said multiple vehicles were involved, minor injuries were reported and wreckers were working to clear the area.  CTPost

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Connecticut homebuyers turned to adjustable-rate mortgages during the spring market to lower monthly costs amid high home prices. Federal data shows the state has one of the highest ARM shares nationally—experts caution that rising rates may lead to bigger payments if home values fall.  CTPost

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Researchers at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station report that heavy acorn years boost rodent numbers and lead to more ticks two years later, which raises the risk of Lyme disease and Powassan virus. They noted that controlling acorns alone may not lower tick populations—deer and other animals also help ticks thrive.  CTPost

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Westport real estate shows rising prices and strong buyer demand even as single-family home sales declined, with 69 homes sold at an average of $2.576 million and 19 condos at $1.364 million—sellers are using private listings to test the market—while a 6-bedroom home on Fraser Lane is listed for $10.95 million.  06880

SPORTS NEWS

  • UConn center fielder Caleb Shpur set a record on May 3 at Villanova by going 7-for-7 in a game—extending his hitting streak to 12 games and helping the Huskies achieve a 17-1 record.
