- ➤ Herb Podel, a 101-year-old World War II veteran, will serve as grand marshal for the Memorial Day parade on May 25. Westport residents can also enjoy the Pops Concert on June 5, Taste of Westport on June 3, and the YMCA’s Golf for Good tournament on May 18. 06880
- ➤ Westport’s Parks & Recreation Department reviewed BL Companies’ Phase I recommendations last night calling for a community garden at Burr Farms, two synthetic turf fields, and upgrades at Compo Beach + Winslow Park and a maintenance facility; the department said nothing is set in stone as it assesses the plan. 06880

- ➤ Westport Transit District hosted a double dactyl poetry contest where 7 locals competed to win restaurant gift cards + Carter Teplica won first prize while other entrants earned honors, including student Saniyah R. The contest promoted creativity and highlighted the local Wheels2U app service. 06880
- ➤ Staples Players has released a double feature of its Cabaret productions from 1984 (with David Roth as the emcee) and 2004 (with Brandon Floch in the role). The video shows how high school actors tackled a challenging musical with evolving filming technology. 06880
- ➤ Connecticut native John Ratzenberger returns as Hamm in Toy Story 5, which will release on June 19. The film pits classic toys against a high-tech talking tablet named Lilypad and brings back Woody to help the group. The Hour

- ➤ Westport Schools are moving ahead with multiple capital projects as some work, like the Staples auditorium renovation, is underway while plans for improvements at Long Lots, Greens Farms, and Saugatuck are set to continue after summer vacation. - ➤ Westport Public Schools are reviewing their K12 social studies curriculum to align it with district + state standards. At a recent meeting, board members and teachers discussed ensuring balanced instruction and neutrality while starting inquiry based learning in fourth grade with plans to expand to higher grades. - ➤ The board will vote on May 21 on a new policy that revises school library book challenges and Title IX guidelines in Westport. The changes, based on state law, require that only those with a direct interest may file a challenge and that disputes are resolved through a community review process. Westport Journal

- ➤ New Canaan regained No. 1 in the boys lacrosse poll released on May 11 after Staples lost to Darien 8-5, and New Canaan will host Staples at 5 p.m. Thursday. The Hour
