CULTURE NEWS

  • The Norwalk Symphony Orchestra and Fairfield County Chorale will present Mendelssohn’s Elijah at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 16 at Norwalk Concert Hall, and audience members are asked to bring a non-perishable food item+to support The Pantry at CT State Community College Norwalk.  Westport Journal
  • Ukraine Aid International and Fairfield Theatre Company will present the U.S. premiere of the Ukrainian documentary Second Wind on Monday, May 18 at 7:00 p.m. at 70 Sanford St, Fairfield + the screening will feature a Q&A with writer/producer Gennadiy Gazin as it spotlights Ukrainian veterans climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.  Westport Journal
  • Mike Camacho and the Nutmeg Legacy Quartet perform today at VFW Post 399 (465 Riverside Ave.) as part of the Jazz at the Post series presented by the Jazz Society of Fairfield County. Dinner is served at 7 p.m., with musical sets starting at 7:30 and 8:45 p.m.  Westport Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Special Education Legal Fund (SELF) helps Westport families access special education services by providing grants for attorney representation and trained advocates in school meetings. Founded in 2018 by two mothers, the nonprofit offers multilingual resources to support families earning no more than 300% above the state poverty level.  06880
  • For the fiscal year ending 2025, Westport Public Schools expended $143M with 62% for teacher salaries, 19% for health benefits, and 5% for transportation (the per-pupil cost rose from $27,089 to an expected $28,528 due to inflation).  Westport Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • State environmental officials urge drivers in Westport to watch for turtles crossing roads during their nesting season from May through July and to help them cross safely without moving them from their home ranges (special care is advised for snapping turtles).  WFSB
  • Westport’s Department of Public Works launched a campaign urging residents to keep recyclables free of bags, food, and foam—guidelines that help the transfer station in Shelton operate efficiently and may prevent extra costs for everyone.  06880

HEALTH NEWS

  • Connecticut confirmed its first clade I mpox case in a traveler returning from Western Europe, state health officials said Wednesday. Officials say the case poses no public risk and advise those at risk to complete the two-dose JYNNEOS vaccine series ahead of summer travel and gatherings.  WFSB
