Good morning, Westport. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 16th of May.
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ New Canaan's Grace Farms Foundation is featured at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia in Venice, where its exhibit 'Design for Freedom' shows ways to end forced and child labor in the building industry. The exhibition runs until Nov. 23 and uses photos and stories to track ethical practices — a push to protect human rights. The Hour
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ After years of rising rents, Connecticut apartments averaged $1,635 through May 12th, which is about $80 lower than in April — a reversal from an extended trend that could ease summer lease renewals. Zillow data from 6,350 listings shows units with one bedroom and two bedrooms led the decline while rents in nearby states remained steady or higher. CTPost
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ State transportation officials yesterday revealed a plan to replace Westport's 141-year-old Cribari Memorial Bridge with a new structure costing $78 to $80 million that will widen the historic span while keeping its current alignment. The plan — which includes an expected lifespan of 75 to 100 years — will be followed by a public hearing later this year to gather community feedback. Westport Journal
- ➤ Gov. Ned Lamont is not expected to sign an expansion of the state's Trust Act that would cut state funding from companies working with federal immigration officials because his spokesperson said the current law already supports local law enforcement. Lawmakers continue to negotiate proposals while some say the changes could be an unnecessary political move. CTPost
- ➤ A bill passed by the state Senate would make it a crime for officers to file false records and block access to complaints until investigations end—critics worry that the change may reduce transparency and public oversight of police misconduct. CT Insider
