- ➤ Westport Library is holding its annual spring book sale today (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) with thousands of books, DVDs, CDs, vinyl records and artwork available for purchase. Proceeds from the sale support library programming and help employ people with disabilities at the Westport Book Shop while the event continues on Sunday and Monday. News 12 Connecticut
- ➤ Westport will host a busy week with the 52nd Fine Arts Festival on Memorial Day weekend on May 24 and 25 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Main and Elm Streets and the SHS Pops Concert will be held on June 6 at Levitt Pavilion with gates opening at 6 p.m. Local non-profits will receive $65,000 in grants + the Sunrise Rotary Club is holding a food drive today from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Westport Youth Commission has relaunched its free Job Bank for high school students and AAPI Heritage Month events include a family hike on May 18, a book talk on May 20 and a Club203 celebration at Earthplace. 06880

- ➤ More than 100 Staples High School students walked out Friday morning to show support for former soccer coach Russell Oost-Lievense after his contract was not renewed following a 14-hour Board meeting — they held signs and chanted for justice while protesting district officials’ decisions. CTPost
- ➤ The Board of Education approved a bell-to-bell smartphone ban at Staples High School for next year and set up an implementation committee to resolve details such as whether it applies to seniors—at the same meeting, board members upheld a decision to not renew a boys soccer coach’s contract and agreed to lock a school gate during school hours after local concerns were raised. The committee will work with administrators, staff, students, and parents to get the new policy right, while the gate will remain open before and after school and on weekends. 06880

- ➤ State officials plan to replace the historic William F. Cribari Memorial Bridge with a new span costing between $78 and $86 million and built wider and taller, but local residents worry the design will bring more truck traffic and pose safety risks for children and pedestrians. DOT said further studies are planned and a public hearing will be held this fall to address the concerns. Westport Journal
