  • Hundreds of dogs and their owners gathered at Winslow Park on May 18 for the 9th annual Dog Festival, which featured games, an obstacle course, a police K-9 demonstration and pet vendors. Several hours earlier, 500 people attended the 7th annual Day of Champions fundraiser at PJ Romano Field, which nearly reached its $175,000 goal (sponsored by Experience Camps).  06880
  • Today, local news reports former resident and ex-FBI director James Comey is under Secret Service investigation as his new book 'FDR Drive' publishes tomorrow; local TV journalists interviewed him on their podcast — and photographer Lynsey Addario is highlighting a humanitarian crisis abroad — while community events include the Westport Library Spring Book Sale, PAL college scholarships, Rotary awards and service projects, and the peaceful passing of longtime resident Esther Brodie at age 98.  06880

CULTURE NEWS

  • Downtown Westport will host the 52nd annual Fine Arts Festival on Memorial Day weekend with events on May 24 and May 25 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. along Main and Elm streets—featuring work by more than 165 artists in 11 categories, live musical acts and Sesame Street-themed activities for children, organized by the Westport Downtown Association.  Westport Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At its May 15 meeting, the Westport Board of Education voted 7—0 to change its bylaw so future student representatives cannot serve as Staples High School student council president while current representatives remain exempt. The board also adopted a new 2025-26 operating budget, accepted a $16,000 gift for library furniture, and provided an update on Long Lots Elementary redistricting.  Westport Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Ned Lamont signed a declaration on Monday that lets the state Assembly decide to fully fund Medicaid for the rest of the fiscal year if lawmakers approve the needed funds. Over 900,000 people rely on Medicaid for health care and lawmakers must take steps to keep these services running—ensuring that vulnerable residents receive the help they need.  WFSB

SPORTS NEWS

  • Staples High girls tennis team ended its season with a 13-2 record and is the third seed at the FCIAC tournament today. The Wreckers lost their season finale 6-1 to Fairfield Ludlowe and won their last four matches, including a strong win against Ridgefield on May 15.  Westport Journal
  • Staples High baseball beat Fairfield Ludlowe 10-0 Saturday at Kiwanis Field—strong pitching and base running led to a five-inning mercy rule win. Coach McFarland said the team will use this win to build its position as it prepares for three more games this week and the CIAC playoffs.  Westport Journal
  • The GameTimeCT poll from Monday, May 19 showed that the Top 10 softball teams remained the same as last week though several teams swapped positions – Masuk led with Woodland close behind and Waterford moved up – while conference tournaments will start later this week and CIAC state tournaments are set for June 2 when the next poll will be released.  The Hour
