  • Local officials rescheduled meetings on Long Lots funding—with the Board of Finance now set to meet on June 5 about a $93 million proposal and further votes expected on June 11 while the RTM Education Committee meets on June 10 at 5:30 p.m.—as a coyote lunged at a dog near Joanne Circle Tuesday at 10 p.m., Taste of Westport kicks off on June 5 at the Inn at Longshore, Westport Police arrested a woman on larceny charges, Cantor Richard Silverman’s funeral is set for June 3, and the town marked its 190th anniversary on May 28.  06880
  • On Memorial Day, thousands gathered in Westport to honor local heroes during a parade that began at 8:30 a.m. with the Westport PD motorcycle unit leading the procession—veterans presented their colors as they crossed the Ruth Steinkraus Cohen Memorial Bridge.  Westport Local
  • Dolores “DoDo” Bacharach, a well-known volunteer in Westport, died Monday at her home at 97. Her family said she led a life of service by helping start Westport’s first soup kitchen and many church programs—her memorial Mass will be held on July 19 at Assumption Church.  06880

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Superintendent Thomas Scarice informed families that the last student day will be an early dismissal on June 13 and Staples High School Class of 2025 will graduate on June 11 at 6:00 p.m. on the football field—each elementary school will hold field days including Staples’ first Field Day called Wrecker Fest ’25 while all eight schools earned the No Place for Hate designation and a summer plan will be drafted for a bell-to-bell phone-free day at Staples plus new AI integration objectives.  06880

SPORTS NEWS

  • Staples coach Jack McFarland met with his baseball team in early April to help junior Jules Cicero after his mother, Stacey Campbell, passed away (she died on April 13) and the team united to support him. Cicero continued to play with a strong batting average while teammates (including his best friend Mason Tobias) comforted him during practices and games.  06880
  • Darien sisters Chloe, Ashley, and Nicole Humphrey led the University of North Carolina women’s lacrosse team to a national championship win over Northwestern on May 25 — Chloe was named Most Outstanding Player as the team finished an undefeated season.  The Hour
