CULTURE NEWS

  • Westport will celebrate America’s 250th anniversary with an upgraded fireworks show at Compo Beach on July 2. Families who buy tickets will receive a free limited-edition FlowArt Guided Art Pad (ticket sales support Westport PAL programs).  06880
  • The Westport Independence Day Fireworks Celebration is set for Saturday, July 4 at Compo Beach with fireworks at 9 p.m. and a rain date of July 3; the event is one among many statewide displays scheduled to mark America’s 250th birthday.  WFSB
  • Westport Pride will kick off on Monday, June 1 at 4:00 p.m. with a flag-raising ceremony at Jesup Green — local leaders including First Selectman Kevin Christie and State Senator Ceci Maher are expected to attend, and a town-wide celebration is planned for Sunday, June 14 at noon.  06880

  • A new LendingTree study finds personal loan requests for everyday bills in Connecticut have more than doubled since 2023 as costs for gas, groceries, and rent have risen. Borrowers typically request about $5,629 with an average credit score of 579, and experts urge reaching out to lenders about hardship programs.  WFSB

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Saugatuck Spinnaker released plans to build 157 rental units with 10% affordable and 283 underground parking spots on a 1.5-acre parcel; the project undergoes a pre-application review on Monday (June 1) held by Planning and Zoning. Meanwhile, initial renderings for Long Lots Elementary show a redesigned campus with its opening pushed to January 2028.  06880

  • Fairfield Prep dominated the SCC boys lacrosse championship by shutting out Notre Dame-West Haven 17-0 on Friday, May 29. The Jesuits controlled the game from the opening faceoff & now prepare for the state tournament.  WFSB
  • Shoreline defeated Simsbury 22-0 on Friday, May 29 to win the girls club rugby tournament state title—Kerrigan Mack scored on a breakaway run and Lucy Bowers added from a side throw-in—the co-op team represents five Fairfield schools.  WFSB
  • Staples defeated North Haven 20-0 in the Connecticut high school girls club rugby quarterfinals on May 29, 2026 when star Amelia Giomond scored three tries during a seven-on-seven match with tackling and laterals.  WFSB
