CULTURE NEWS

  • The Beardsley Zoo welcomed two rare Chinese Gorals that now live next to Ponya the Red Panda as part of ongoing conservation efforts. Zoo officials said the new animals will help teach visitors about wildlife.  News 12 Connecticut
  • Yesterday, hundreds of fans gathered at the Westport Country Playhouse to mark the 50th anniversary of Jaws by watching the 1975 film (screened at 11:58 a.m.). Next Monday the playhouse will host a reading of The Shark is Broken, a play about the behind-the-scenes drama during the film’s making.  News 12 Connecticut

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Board of Education congratulated Westport Public Schools students for strong academic, athletic and extracurricular achievements, including state science fair finalists, top reading scores in elementary schools and impressive college recruiting honors. The board is also preparing plans for a new Long Lots School opening in September, an AI pilot program and a review of a cellphone free high school policy — efforts that will guide future improvements in our schools.  06880

  • A controversial bill to exempt public university research and teaching records from FOIA is facing a deadline today in the Senate. Supporters say it will protect academic freedom & shield faculty while opponents warn it will cut public access & transparency.  CTPost
  • Developers from ROAN Ventures presented updated plans at a Planning and Zoning Commission meeting to address public concerns about parking, traffic, and sightlines to the Saugatuck River, and the new designs include a larger public plaza, adjusted building layouts, and lower heights. The updated plans are due by today—if delivered, the commission will decide whether to extend the Hamlet review period—ensuring the decision is made by the June 18 deadline.  Westport Journal
