  • Staples High School held its 25th annual Scholar-Athlete dinner last night, awarding plaques, scholarships, and leadership awards to student athletes while Westport Little League also gave sportsmanship honors in memory of Perrin Ryan Delorey—adding to a week of local celebrations. Other events included a Pride celebration at Saugatuck Congregational Church, an Eagle Court of Honor for Troop 139's Jordan O’Brien, a Great Duck Race scheduled for June 28, a snapped photo of a snapping turtle by a local photographer, and the passing of songwriter Roger Nichols last month.  06880

CULTURE NEWS

  • At the 78th Annual Tony Awards on June 8 in New York City, the musical 'Maybe Happy Ending' won six awards including Best New Musical and Darren Criss earned Best Leading Actor in a Musical. Connecticut natives Harvey Fierstein, who received a Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement, and Christian Siriano, who designed stars' looks & Darren Criss & Audra McDonald, were honored for their local ties and contributions to theater.  CTPost

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Niche ranked the 10 best public middle schools in Connecticut and found Westport’s Coleytown Middle School is No. 1 with 464 students and an A+ grade while Bedford Middle School is seventh with 729 students—showing strong local education performance.  CTPost
  • State data shows that fewer Connecticut high schoolers are graduating on time as the four-year graduation rate dropped from 88.9% to 88.4% since last year, reversing years of improvement before the pandemic. Education officials say that many students are missing class due to financial pressures and family needs + and believe that initiatives like credit recovery and college readiness will help reverse the trend in coming years.  CTPost

  • Officials report that the invasive Asian needle ant has caused serious allergic reactions in Connecticut and advise residents to wear gloves when gardening—peak numbers are expected in July and August.  News 12 Connecticut

  • Sixteen high school teams competed in the CIAC girls lacrosse semifinals last week with games played in four divisions at venues such as Rafferty Stadium and Brookfield HS Field—defending champions and rematch contenders faced off to set the stage for the state finals held at Fairfield University, Kavanaugh Field and the University of Hartford.  CTPost
