COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Westport will honor pickleball champion Tom Lowrie by renaming the Compo Beach courts the Lowrie Courts; a plaque will be approved by the RTM on July 1 to mark the tribute. Lowrie, who is turning 97 next week—known for promoting the sport throughout town—has led efforts that have grown the Westport Pickleball Association.  Westport Journal
  • Sea Kayak Connecticut offers kids camps, group lessons & private lessons and outings on the water at its Westport waterfront location. The company provides sea kayaks, paddleboards, paddling gear, equipment rentals and special tours including sunset, full moon and island excursions for paddlers of all skill levels.  News 12 Connecticut

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Westport Museum for History and Culture unveiled two panels that highlight underrepresented histories of early African-American and Native American Paugusset residents in town. The panels—dedicated last November and moved to their final spots this week—offer key facts about Westport’s diverse past.  Westport Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Westport Planning and Zoning Commission met on Monday to discuss a text amendment that would let Homes with Hope provide off-site affordable housing in an existing two-family house to replace three units initially planned at a luxury development (785 Post Road East). Richard Redniss argued the proposal offers better affordability with a $1,869 rent cap for a family of four (and the hearing is set to continue on June 30 amid debate over transparency).  Westport Journal
  • The Westport Conservation Department will start a new fee schedule on July 1 that replaces the old construction-cost model with flat fees by project type—this update is the first in ten years. Conservation Director Colin Kelly said the change keeps fees fair and helps property owners plan permit applications more easily.  Westport Journal

  • A group of new dining spots have opened across Connecticut as July nears, offering a variety of choices for local food lovers. The list includes ROLi in Wooster Square, Birdcode’s fourth location in New Britain, Nan Xiang in Stamford with Michelin-recommended soup dumplings, Sweetgreen in New Haven, an Italian restaurant at Mohegan Sun, Momosan at Foxwoods, Raising Cane’s in Wethersfield, a new Chick-fil-A in West Hartford, Shah’s Halal Food in New Haven, and Westport-based Pizza Lyfe’s second location in Milford — each serving distinct menus for all tastes.  The Hour
