Good morning, Westport. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 23rd of July.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Westport Public Schools will lose about $85,000 from a federal education funding freeze that will affect professional development but not the $150.4 million operating budget — officials note that other districts face cuts in the millions.  Westport Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • State officials have urged Westport residents to kill any spotted lanternflies they see and report each sighting immediately (use alcohol or hand sanitizer to destroy egg masses) because these pests can harm trees and crops. The insects are now seen across the region (with rising numbers in Fairfield and New Haven counties) and may damage up to half the state’s trees and local farms if not controlled.  WFSB
  • Westport Library has set up a trap on its cafe patio to catch spotted lanternflies that are damaging a Ginko Biloba tree—officials report the invasive pests feed on more than 70 types of plants and may harm local gardens and crops. Local experts are monitoring the situation and advising homeowners on simple methods to reduce the threat.  Westport Local

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents interested in running for Representative Town Meeting may pick up petition forms at the Town Clerk’s Office today to secure the 25 required signatures for the November 4 ballot. Completed petitions must be returned by September 9 — ensuring candidates are ready to serve on the 36-member body that governs key town decisions.  Westport Journal
  • At a Monday meeting the Westport Planning & Zoning Commission moved to deny the Hamlet project due to concerns over design, parking and waterfront access even though staff found the plan compliant with a 2022 amendment. The vote on July 28 will decide the future of the 11-building plan, with four commissioners opposing it and three in favor—suggesting developers may need to revise their proposal.  Westport Journal

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The historic building at 50 Post Road West will be restored as apartments with 13 units planned in the old structure and 4 in a new barn-style building — 20% of which will be affordable. The owner will request a zoning change and construction may begin this fall.  06880
