EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Earthplace’s Kids’ Night Out held Friday evening, young Nature Detectives followed clues like tracks and hair to determine that a skunk made the mess on the wooden rail trails (sponsored by Bartaco in Westport). The educational event for children ages 4 to 13 will have future outings on Sept. 19 and Oct. 17.  Westport Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A state law requires boaters to be certified, and an eight‑hour safety course will be held on Aug. 18 and 20 at VFW Post 399, 465 Riverside Ave., on the Saugatuck River from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Retired U.S. Coast Guard chief boatswain mate Barry Natale—who has search and rescue experience—will teach the course for $25 so participants can earn a Connecticut Safe Boating Certificate.  Westport Journal

  • The CDC reports 49 West Nile virus cases in 15 states this year—health officials advise Westport residents to remove standing water and wear long sleeves to reduce the risk of mosquito bites.  News 12 Connecticut

  • Today, a brief rain gave way to the Soundview Summer Stroll along the Compo Beach exit road, where two bands (including Rock Paper Soul) are playing until 5. Old Mill Grocery is selling gelato, pizza and more while kids enjoy activities and neighbors ride bikes, rollerblades, strollers and bring dogs (on leashes) in the afternoon.  06880

  • The Building Department issued a permit to demolish the 1¾-story cape at 8 Pond Edge Road in Westport. Built in 1966, the home offers 2,800 square feet with three bedrooms and an inground pool — it traded for $1,775,000 in 2021 and is now assessed at $1,145,200.  Westport Journal
