  • Staples High students will swim 5 miles at Lake Quassapaug (planned for August 30) to raise funds for rare skin disorder research, and on Friday Weston residents honored former 1st Selectman Hal Shupack by naming the Gillespie Center courtyard after him. Other updates include new downtown parking rules that now limit on-street parking to 2 hours with unclear enforcement times and upcoming events like Westoberfest on October 4 and a 9/11 Day meal pack event in Bridgeport calling for volunteer sign-ups by August 20 (a local author released his first novel set in town and Apollo 13 commander James Lovell died at 97).  06880

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • An abandoned kayak was spotted a couple of hundred yards offshore off Compo Beach this afternoon — Westport Police and local boaters quickly acted to rescue a Westport man who had been in the water for about 45 minutes before he was brought to Ned Dimes Marina.  06880

  • Trumbull native Alison Espach talked about her popular novel 'The Wedding People,' which follows a divorced woman trying to start over at a Rhode Island hotel—she once thought the story was too dark for readers—and said film rights were bought last year. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Developers have appealed the Planning and Zoning Commission’s rejection of their Hamlet at Saugatuck project in Superior Court—filing an 8-30g application to build 400 to 500 affordable housing units. Town attorney Ira Bloom said the commission spent time reviewing evidence before voting 4-0 on the mixed-use development plan.  CTPost
