  • Addison Moore, a rising college senior and graduate of Staples High School, started one of Fairfield County’s largest youth service groups and is now planning a run for the Representative Town Meeting—making him the youngest candidate ever. He visited the Westport Library to share his ideas and commitment to the town’s future.  06880

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Sales Tax-Free week will run from Sunday, Aug. 17 until Saturday, Aug. 23 and gives shoppers a break on clothing and footwear under $100 — boosting back-to-school spending. Westport shop owner Annette Norton said her store saw a 20% rise during similar events — encouraging increased local business.  News 12 Connecticut

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dr. Anna Mahon, a former college athlete and 2004 Olympian, began serving as Westport’s new assistant superintendent for teaching and learning on July 1. She will work on school programs and lead an AI initiative to help students and teachers—using lessons from her sports and education career.  06880

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Sherwood Island State Park in Westport spans 238 acres of varied environments—sandy beaches, coastal wetlands and wooded trails that host wildlife and Connecticut's official 9/11 Living Memorial. The park is open daily from 8 a.m. until sunset and free to Connecticut residents with a valid license plate.  Westport Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Westport will hold two public sessions—one on Aug. 20 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Center for Senior Activities, 21 Imperial Ave., and one on Aug. 21 from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m.—to gather feedback on improving accessibility in public spaces. John McGovern will lead the sessions as he reviews ADA rules and recent assessment findings.  Westport Journal
  • Optimum will change the channel numbers for public broadcasts in 10 Connecticut communities — including Westport — on Aug. 21; government broadcasts will move from Channel 79 to 1310 and education broadcasts from Channel 78 to 1305, prompting local stations to rebrand and alert viewers.  CTPost
  • Connecticut Attorney General William Tong warned telecommunications providers on Aug 11th about illegal robocalls that scammers use to harm consumers — he joined 50 other state attorneys general in sending letters to 37 voice providers and 99 downstream providers for not following FCC rules like registering in the Robocall Mitigation Databases and filing call reduction plans.  CTPost

HEALTH NEWS

  • State scientists reported that four rare exotic tick species were found on human travelers returning to Connecticut from trips between 2019 and 2023—ticks from nations including Guatemala, Costa Rica, Belize, Tanzania, Germany, Poland, and Scotland. They said the cases have not turned into a public health threat but urge travelers to check for ticks and to notify their doctors if bitten.  WFSB
