  • On Sept. 1, demonstrators gathered at Westport’s Ruth Steinkraus Cohen Bridge as part of a WorkersOverBillionaires protest—an estimated 300 to 350 people from Fairfield County towns attended, and police set up traffic barriers that kept the group off busy Post Road East.  Westport Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Connecticut invented the first combat submarine, Turtle, in 1775 when inventor David Bushnell built a vessel that almost allowed an underwater attack, and the state still builds modern submarines today. The CT River Museum in Essex shows a replica and artifacts that mark a long tradition of boat building — a story of local innovation.  WFSB

  • People in Westport raced to buy Powerball tickets as the jackpot soared to $1.3 billion with the drawing set for 10:59 p.m. tonight—local residents at the Exxon gas station on Post Road East are joining others in hoping to win one of the largest jackpots ever.  News 12 Connecticut

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Ned Lamont proposed a $55 billion two-year budget at the State Capitol that included plans to review the Trust Act and protect against ICE—progressive groups said more urgent measures are needed and lawmakers will hold hearings with a special session planned for October.  CTPost
  • Today, Police Chief David Farrell said Westport’s license plate reader system, used for over 15 years, captures only vehicle plates and stores the data for 30 days—rules that keep privacy intact and stop its use for improper immigration checks. He added that the system helps solve crimes by alerting officers to stolen vehicles and that its funding and oversight were discussed at recent public meetings.  06880
  • Today, Westport police launched a Back to School safety campaign that targets speeding, cell phone use, and unsafe bus passing—drivers may receive citations if they violate these rules.  Westport Journal
