  • Sheila Groonell from Westport, a Staples graduate, was treated at Sutter Hospital in Lakeport after a health scare during a Buddhist retreat, where she met doctor Stephen Cady and volunteer Pete Humphrey who also went to Staples. The three were surprised to learn of their shared Westport roots (1965, 1980, 1979) and felt comfort from the connection.  06880

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Emergency crews responded to a car fire on Wednesday afternoon near I-95 northbound—Exits 17 and 18—and quickly extinguished the flames in Westport.  WFSB

  • Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville and Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket were named among the 10 best casinos outside Las Vegas in USA Today's annual 10Best rankings. Mohegan Sun earned top honors for slots while Foxwoods was recognized for its players club.  The Hour

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Researchers at UConn are studying why flat fish are less common in Long Island Sound—comparing preserved specimens with modern fish to see if diet changes in the ecosystem are causing the decline, with state funding supporting the two-year research effort.  WFSB
  • The spotted lanternfly was found in all eight counties in Connecticut—especially in Fairfield and New Haven. Experts said the invasive bug feeds on many plants and may harm crops so people should crush it when they see it.  News 12 Connecticut
  • Officials said that the brush fire risk was high on Wednesday in parts of southern and southwestern Connecticut (including Fairfield, New Haven and southern Middlesex counties) due to dry weather and low humidity. They added that restrictions on brush burning permits within 100 feet of grassland or woodland were in effect as the summer fire season continued.  CTPost

  • State leaders announced Connecticut’s new minimum wage on Wednesday—Governor Lamont said the hourly wage will rise from $16.35 to $16.94 starting January 1.  WFSB
