- ➤ CT-based Subway announced that it will end the use of caged hens in its U.S. supply chain by Nov. 1 and will complete a full transition for its Canadian restaurants by year-end—an effort praised by an animal-rights group for supporting public health. The Hour
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Westport photographer Stacy Waldman Bass shared her new memoir Lightkeeper at the Westport Library forum last night—she said the book, which reflects on her father's seaplane crash and her mother's cancer battle, honors her family legacy. She explained that writing the memoir helped her channel grief into a lasting tribute to those she lost. Westport Journal
- ➤ The Artists Collective of Westport is holding a pop-up art show at the Barn at Westport Country Playhouse from noon to 4 p.m. on Sept. 19, 20 and 21, featuring a dozen local artists. A reception with food, beverages and live music is set for today from 6 to 8 p.m.—the show closes Sunday with an artist panel including Elisa Keogh, Nancy Landauer, Hernan Garcia and Mary Harold. - ➤ StoryFest, the Westport Library’s annual literary festival, will celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day with an exclusive book launch for We Survived the Night by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Julian Brave NoiseCat—one day before the memoir’s nationwide release. NoiseCat will join Ramin Ganeshram for a conversation at 7 p.m. on Monday, October 13—tickets cost $30 and include a copy of the book. Westport Journal
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ FirstLight said a later drawdown will lower water levels at Lake Zoar, Lake Lillinonah and Candlewood Lake because the winter is warmer and wetter; the work will start Oct. 18 for Lake Zoar and continue into November with levels back to normal before Memorial Day—state and federal groups are helping. - ➤ Wildfire season in Connecticut will begin in October and DEEP warned that most wildfires are caused by people. The agency reported record damage in 2024—605 fires burned over 500 acres, eight buildings were destroyed, one firefighter died, and eight were hurt, including the Hawthorne fire on Lamentation Mountain. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Westport’s Hamlet development faces a setback as two RTM committees recommended reversing earlier approvals from the FECB and Conservation Commission after a hearing ended too early last June. The RTM will meet on September 25 to vote on the matter—if approved, the developer must resubmit its proposals. Westport Journal
