  • A longtime Westport resident recalled that the original YMCA was downtown for about 90 years—an important part of the town’s heritage that many newcomers do not know. ECONOMY NEWS

  • Connecticut's economy grew by 4.6% in Q2, ranking joint-ninth nationally and beating the 3.8% national rate as key sectors like finance, manufacturing, and information drove the gain.   • Robert Harrington launched a write-in campaign for a Westport Board of Education seat this morning—he said he will run as an independent to ask hard questions and keep school decisions transparent after the board extended the superintendent’s contract and held a second coach hearing.  06880

  • Connecticut Sea Grant and the Long Island Sound Partnership surveyed roughly 3,700 residents living in the watershed and found that 26% say the Sound is unsafe for swimming while most residents report that it boosts well-being and drives local economic benefits—showing a positive shift in views since 2006 as water quality has improved.  CTPost

  • Westport First Selectwoman Jennifer Tooker suspended her governor campaign on Friday and said she will explore other ways to join the November ballot — her decision follows careful thought that voters need more time to get to know her.  CTPost
  • Westport Journal will sponsor a debate on Oct. 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the Janet Hartwell Performing Arts Center, 35 Beachside Ave.+ The three First Selectman candidates will face off in this free public event+ and voters must reserve seats in advance before the Nov. 4 election.  Westport Journal
  • On Thursday, Westport’s Representative Town Meeting overturned the environmental approvals for the Hamlet at Saugatuck development after a late-night public hearing revealed procedural errors—Town Attorney Ira Bloom said the developer can reapply as further review takes place.  Westport Journal

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The historic house at 221 Greens Farms Road in Westport is now for sale at $4M; built in 1904 for Edward T. Bedford who founded the town's YMCA and supported local landmarks. The home—designed by James Lindsey Burley and Theodore Culyer Visscher—has five bedrooms, six baths, a heated pool and a green barn on a 2.33-acre lot that preserves its unique character.  CTPost

  • Staples' kicker Mickey Ross kicked a 38 yard field goal as time expired on Sept. 26 to give his team a 34 to 33 win over West Haven—special teams made big plays with blocked kicks and kickoff returns, and Staples will face Darien on Oct. 4.  CTPost
  • Lyman Hall quarterback Ryan Casey rushed for three touchdowns and passed for another in a 31—0 win over Foran on Sept. 26. Coach C.J. Monroe said the Trojans executed a strong game plan—holding Foran to very few yards and controlling the drive throughout the contest.  CTPost
