GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Connecticut Insurance Department launched a free online tool Tuesday that uses advanced modeling by First Street — it lets homeowners check risks from floods, strong winds, and air pollution to help guide their insurance choices. The tool follows major floods in western Connecticut in 2024 and is expected to improve how consumers understand weather risks.  The Hour
  • CT officials warned lawmakers that federal funding cuts and the end of tax breaks for solar panels and electric vehicles will raise costs for new energy projects soon. They said a government shutdown may worsen these changes and force a shift in state budgets—raising concerns for all energy users.  CTPost
  • At Monday's Planning and Zoning meeting, commissioners delayed decisions on two projects: one to tear down a 1756 historic house at 125 Riverside Ave for a new home with an accessory unit and another to build an office at 715 Post Road East where logs are piled. A new hearing is set for Oct. 20 so officials can review public concerns — including safety and environmental issues raised in letters.  Westport Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • If health care tax credits expire on December 31, up to 52,000 local residents may lose their coverage and face premiums that rise by 75% while hospitals experience a $22 million drop in revenue. Officials warn this change will force many to delay care—making emergency treatment more common and costly in the future.  The Hour

SPORTS NEWS

  • Staples boys soccer won by a score of three to zero over Fairfield Ludlowe yesterday at Taft Field, improving their record to nine wins, two losses and no ties in a match that saw an early goal plus strong defense in the first 50 minutes. • Natalie Chudowsky, a 17-year-old soccer player from Staples and a two-time All-State pick, was selected to play defense for the U.S. women's U-17 team at the World Cup in Morocco that will begin on October 17—she skipped her senior season to focus on making the team, and the U.S. will face Ecuador on October 18.  CTPost
