COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Due to an uncertain weather forecast, Bike Westport has postponed its Bridge-to-Bridge Walk to October 19, when local office candidates will walk from Jesup Green to Kneads to highlight improvements in walkability and safety. Meanwhile, the Westport Woman’s Club is accepting nonprofit applications for Ruegg Grants due October 30, Pink Aid is marking 15 years with a sold-out gala on October 16, and Corporal Ed Wooldridge was named Officer of the Year by the police department.  06880

CULTURE NEWS

  • At the Sheffer Gallery in Westport, the 'Every Picture Tells a Story' exhibit will show photographs from the Westport Public Art Collections from October 8 through December 15. A reception is scheduled on October 15 from 6 to 7 p.m.—curator Arthur Nager will lead an artist talk from 7 to 8 p.m. that features work by both local and renowned photographers.  Westport Journal
  • StoryFest Saturday 2025 was held in Westport and featured over 30 authors in panel discussions, book signings and a family-friendly spooky storytelling session at the Museum for History & Culture starting at 10 am, with more literary events at the local library until 5 pm—bringing diverse voices to the community.  Westport Journal
  • StoryFest 2025 will present a special screening of Bonnie Blue: James Cotton’s Life in the Blues on October 17 with doors opening at 6 pm and the film starting at 6:30 pm—followed by a live concert by the James Montgomery Blues Band featuring local saxophonist Crispin Cioe and Christine Ohlman. The event will highlight the legacy of blues music and offer an evening of film and performance for local fans.  Westport Journal
  • MoCA CT will host Collecting 501 on October 16 from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm at 19 Newtown Turnpike in Westport — this free session in the On the Art of Collecting series will cover strategies for buying, selling, and loaning art as well as tax planning while providing refreshments.  Westport Journal
  • The online art gallery features fall-themed art and invites local artists to submit images by email—submissions must include the art medium and access is free with donations encouraged.  06880

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Superintendent Thomas Scarice said the district will present its strategic AI plan and Code of Ethics to the Board on October 23 at Staples High School cafeteria— the plan guides how AI will boost learning while keeping the human element central. The district will also start a phone- and smart technology-free school day for K–12 students on November 5 and is reviewing facilities projects for safer, modern classrooms.  06880

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Senate approved a $5 billion allocation on October 11 to fund advance purchase of parts for Columbia-class submarines at Electric Boat in Groton — a boost for local defense work that also supports Pratt & Whitney’s jet engine assembly and Sikorsky’s helicopter production across the state. The funding, part of the National Defense Authorization Act, will help maintain local jobs as the Navy aims to build one new sub each year until 2036.  CTPost

SPORTS NEWS

  • In Week 5 of CIAC football, several teams lost their perfect record as standout players like New Britain's Jayden Allen, who rushed for 225 yards and scored four touchdowns, helped secure wins, and Wilton beat Staples 41-7 thanks to strong plays from Charlie Calabrese and Dennis Dustin. Coaches said the results boosted team confidence as they prepared for upcoming playoff matchups—details that set the stage for the remainder of the season.  CTPost
