COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Long Lots Elementary School will hold its groundbreaking tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. at Terrace 4 while CVS now offers new bags with handles and Sustainable Westport partners with local groups to collect durable medical equipment on November 15 and 16. The community will also host a Westport Writers Workshop fundraiser for breast cancer on Thursday at 6:30 p.m., a Heart in a Heart screening event on Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Aitoro Appliances, a Fairfield County Walk to End Alzheimer’s on October 26 at Sherwood Island State Park, and a talk by Rabbi Angela Buchdahl on October 28 at Temple Israel.  06880
  • Israel released more than 1,900 prisoners while Hamas freed 20 living hostages early Monday, prompting a celebration at a local Jewish Community Center in Stamford where leaders like Rabbi Daniel Cohen expressed relief and hope for peace—residents see this moment as a step toward stability amid ongoing challenges. CULTURE NEWS

  • The late actress Diane Keaton filmed three movies in Connecticut using Fairfield County locations like Bristol, Bridgeport, Southport, Greenwich, Darien, and Stamford — 'And So It Goes' was shot at Lake Compounce, 'The Big Wedding' used local spots in Greenwich, Darien, and Stamford, and 'The Family Stone' was filmed using a historic home in Greenwich — which shows her strong bond with the state.  CTPost
  • Saturday night at StoryFest, Clay McLeod Chapman will kick off the event with a live edition of his Verso Studios podcast Fearmongers on the main stage at 6:30 p.m.—doors open at 6 p.m.—while the audience gets ready for authentic live readings. At 7:30 p.m., New York Times best-selling author Josh Malerman and his theatrical troupe Wow Town will present scenes from his bestseller Incidents Around the House and then join Gregory Galloway for an exclusive talk back.  Westport Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • WalletHub ranked Connecticut’s top 10 colleges and universities using factors such as graduation rate and post-attendance salary data — Yale University ranked highest. The early decision deadline for college applicants will be Nov. 1.  WFSB

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A nor'easter hit Westport on Oct. 12, bringing strong wind and rain that caused power outages and coastal flooding. The National Weather Service warned of high winds and flooding and officials in New York and New Jersey declared states of emergency.  CTPost

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Parks & Rec director Erik Barbieri reorganized his team after the retirements of deputy director Rick Giunta and customer services manager Barb Vornkahl, promoting Michael Giunta to operations superintendent and naming Carmen Roda as recreation superintendent while giving new roles to program staff and office manager Jamie Boone. He requested funding at a Board of Finance meeting on October 8 for repairs to the Longshore golf course irrigation system, E.R. Strait Marina bulkhead and Library steps (covering three critical projects) and he will unveil the final master plan by the end of November.  06880
