CULTURE NEWS

  • The Westport Library StoryFest kicked off Monday with celebrated writer Julien Brave NoiseCat opening one of the Northeast's largest literary festivals and hosting panels and workshops with award-winning authors. Christina Baker Kline will speak about her book Orphan Train on Saturday, October 18 from 3-4 p.m.—while Derrick Barnes will address youth and identity topics from 1-2 p.m. and visit local schools.  06880
  • WestPAC marks 60 years of public art that began with Burt Chernow’s vision of daily art in Westport schools—its collection of over 2,000 works is displayed in schools, town buildings and parks—and the Library is hosting a reception at 6 p.m. with a talk by Arthur Nager at 7 p.m. today.  06880

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State officials warned that if the prolonged shutdown continues, nearly 436,000 people may soon lose SNAP benefits and 53,000 may lose WIC support—threatening food access for low-income families. Gov. Ned Lamont said he is stepping up state funding efforts—while waiting for federal reimbursement to help bridge the gap.  CTPost
  • Today, Westport hosts several civic events aimed at strengthening local government participation—these include an artist conversation with curator Arthur Nager at the Sheffer Gallery and a public debate on the First Selectman race scheduled for November. REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • In September, Gemspring Capital bought the Bankside at National Hall office building at 54 Wilton Road for $16.5 million, paying $627 per square foot—the highest rate among recent Connecticut deals. The two-level, 26,000-square-foot building on the Saugatuck River replaced the former Save the Children headquarters that flooded during Sandy over a dozen years ago.  The Hour

SPORTS NEWS

  • Wilton football has shown strong improvement under coach EJ DiNunzio—since 2018 the team has posted a 48-23 record and broken long losing streaks against rivals New Canaan and Ridgefield. The Warriors joined the Top 10 poll after a dominant win over then-No. 5 Staples—now they look ahead to future games against Greenwich and St. Joseph as they push for a postseason spot.  CTPost
