Good morning, Westport. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 25th of October.

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Scientists say that trees change color in fall as the chlorophyll fades and hidden pigments show, turning the leaves red, yellow, or orange. Bright, sunny days make the colors bold while rainy days cause a dull display—this helps explain what we see in New England each autumn.  CT Insider
  • Scientists at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station used DNA analysis to show that the Aedes aegypti mosquito came from Africa on slave ships more than 300 years ago—linking early yellow fever outbreaks to its arrival. They noted that Aedes albopictus has now moved into nearby areas and may spread tropical diseases if warmer weather continues.  CTPost

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Two Westport residents have submitted letters endorsing Don O’Day and Andrea Moore for First and Second Selectmen, emphasizing their local experience and a bipartisan approach to town governance — one writer highlights Don’s financial background and deep roots in community service while the other praises longstanding local ties and collaborative leadership.  Westport Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, News 12’s Rebecca Surran spoke with Kristen Cusato of the Fairfield County Alzheimer’s Association about new research that shows ways to lower Alzheimer’s risk. The Fairfield County 2025 Walk to End Alzheimer’s is set for today at Sherwood Island State Park — Westport.  News 12 Connecticut

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Rick Benson—a local builder with decades of experience—outbid the lenders at a foreclosure auction for 223 Hillspoint Road and will become the new owner in early November. He plans to restart the stalled home project that troubled the neighborhood for 11 years and will complete it from scratch with few changes so it complements the area and is on the market by spring.  06880

SPORTS NEWS

  • More than six months after winning their 12th national title by defeating South Carolina on April 6 in Tampa, UConn women's basketball received their championship rings during a private ceremony on Thursday evening. The ring design features 12 trapezoidal stones to mark each title (including a removable bezel that doubles as a pendant and a piece of the game ball inside).  The Hour
  • GametimeCT aired its high school football live show, 'The Drive Home,' featuring hosts Sean Patrick Bowley— a Woodbridge native with over two decades of local sports coverage— and Pete Paguaga, a senior sports producer, who discussed Friday night high school football games in week 7. The show provided expert commentary on game highlights and team performances.  CTPost
  • UConn football will travel to Houston for a 3 p.m. Saturday game against Rice University. The Huskies, with a four game win streak and two past wins in previous meetings, will try to win to become bowl eligible while fans watch on ESPN+.  WFSB
