Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 1st of June.
Good morning, Westport.
🌲 Environment
State scientists say an invasive longhorn tick and the aggressive Asian tiger mosquito are raising concerns as their numbers grow in Fairfield, New Haven, and Hartford counties—experts advise residents to remove standing water and wear long sleeves to protect against bites.
Annual testing and trapping will begin next week to track the pests’ spread.
🏛️ Government
Lawmakers spent Saturday night passing last-minute bills for education and planning a two-year budget before the session ends Wednesday—moves aimed at boosting resources for students and teachers.
The education bill now goes to Governor Lamont for his signature—while public service workers rallied for fair wages.
State lawmakers struck down a provision on May 31 that would have allowed safe injection sites after Gov. Ned Lamont threatened to veto the bill if the measure remained; advocates, including Arya Pelletier & her mother Dita Bhargava from Greenwich who lost a 26-year-old to an overdose in 2018, say they will keep pushing for overdose prevention as similar sites in Canada saw a 35% drop in overdose deaths.
