Good morning, Westport. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 5th of June.

CRIME NEWS

  • 50 Cent won a legal ruling that lets him seize the Westport home at 299 Main Street, valued at about $1 million, from former Sire Spirits executive Mitchell Green, who owed over $7 million after a kickback scheme—this ruling follows a federal court’s decision to lift bankruptcy protections on the property.  06880

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gov. Ned Lamont’s new $55.8 billion two-year budget plan delayed cuts to school funding by keeping about $2.4 billion per year for local districts — it also boosted special education with an extra $40 million for excess cost grants and added a $300 million child care fund for universal preschool — and it kept steady funding for school meals and tutoring programs.  The Hour

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Connecticut’s legislature passed major bills this session, including a $300 million child care trust — which will create 16,000 free preschool and child care slots for families making less than $100K — and new special education funding. A housing bill sets affordable unit quotas in towns — a step to help ease the housing crisis — and lawmakers reached a bipartisan deal to lower electric bills by at least $10 a month before the measures head to Gov. Lamont for his signature.  The Hour

HEALTH NEWS

  • Officials issued a health alert Tuesday after finding ground beef sold at Whole Foods Markets in Connecticut may contain E. coli—this meat with use-by dates June 19 and June 20 is already off shelves and was distributed to states like Georgia, Illinois and Maryland. There are no reported illnesses and customers are advised to throw away or return the product.  CTPost

SPORTS NEWS

  • At Aqua Turf Club on Tuesday, Andrea Hurley received the Saint Clare Award from Franciscan Life Center while her husband, Dan Hurley, had signed a six-year contract with UConn last summer and affirmed his commitment to his college team. The Knicks fired coach Tom Thibodeau on Tuesday — and there was no sign Dan Hurley plans to move to the NBA.  CTPost
